Mark 1:1-8
Feb 08, 2009 am - In the beginning was the Word, And the Word was with God And the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, And without Him nothing was made That was made. In Him was Life, And the Life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, And the darkness did not Comprehend it. And the Word was made flesh And dwelt among us, And we beheld His glory- The glory of the Only-Begotten Of the Father, Full of grace and truth. These lines, taken from the Prologue of John's Gospel, have got to be the finest poetry we have in the New Testament. John has given us good doctrine, and more than that: he's given it to us with great beauty. He was equal parts theologian and artist. Mark was an artist, too, but with a very different gift. What he lacks in beauty, he makes up for in brevity. Mark is several chapters shorter than the other Gospels, and when you compare the sayings of Jesus in Mark to the same ones in Matthew or Luke, you'll find Mark almost always says the same thing in fewer words.
