Feb 20, 2011 am - The prophets of Israel could see into the future. They couldn't see everything, of course, but they could see what the Lord wanted them to. Typically, they saw two things: what was going to happen in the near future, and what was going to happen much later. In the near future, things would be bad for Israel. They were a sinful people, and the Lord would not put up with it much longer. The prophet Joel cried- Blow the trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm in my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; for the day of the Lord is coming, For it is at hand: A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of clouds and thick darkness. This is not an isolated prophecy; pages and pages could be read to the same effect, using the same kind of language, and images even harsher than these. Jeremiah, Amos, Hosea, and the others were prophets of doom-in the short run. But the short-run wasn't all they could see. The judgments of God were terrifying and sure, but they were not final.
