Aug 15, 2004 pm - Today, God willing, we'll move on in our examination of the Apostles Creed. The old confession is not the Bible and it should not be read or believed as though it is. But this does not mean that it is no better than your opinion or mine. It is. For the Lord's sheep hear His voice, and for more 1500 years, they have heard it in the Creed. Not infallibly, but really. The Apostles' Creed is the finest summary of Christian truth ever produced. It may be improved on in the future, but it hasn't been yet. These are the doctrines that matter most. They are clustered around the Person and work of Jesus Christ. The Creed tells us first, who Jesus is: God's Only Son, our Lord. It then tells us how He got here: Conceived by the Holy Ghost [and] born of the virgin Mary. It reports what He did for us: Suffered under Pontius Pilate, [He was] crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. And now, at the end of the middle section, it tells us how He completed His work. His birth, suffering, and death were necessary for our salvation, but if He had quit there, we would be still in our sins. But He did not quit there-with a shameful death and an honored burial.
