Nov 21, 2004 pm - At the end of last year, we began a once-a-month study of the Apostles' creed. For centuries, the Lord's People thought the Creed was drawn up by the Twelve Disciples of Christ, and that it's authority, therefore, was equal to the Bible. They were wrong, of course, but if you've studied the Creed, you understand why they felt this way. Without being inspired or infallible, it summarizes the teaching of the Apostles, and does it so well that after more than 1,500 years it has not been improved on! Someday, it may be done, but nobody's done it yet! Or come close to doing it. The Creed has been widely used and deeply loved for three main reasons: It's short. The whole Christian faith is summed up in 109 words. It's sweet. Though written in an age of fierce doctrinal debate, there's nothing combative or hateful or sarcastic in it. In this, it is far superior to the Athanasian Creed, which though equally true breathes out threatenings and slaughter to everyone who does not understand and accept its every detail. Best of all, the Apostles' Creed is Christ-centered. The Person and Work of our Lord are smack-dab in the middle of the Creed and takes up nearly two-thirds of it. Anything ... More >>>
