Jan 30, 2002 pm - Tonight we come to part two in our study of Thomas Watson on the Application of Redemption. Before we get to it, let me briefly remind you of what it means. Salvation is a work of the Trinity. Each Divine Person works together to save us, but they don't all do the same thing. The Father chooses us for salvation; the son pays the price of our salvation; and the Holy Spirit applies salvation to us. This means you were not saved in eternity and you were not saved when Jesus Christ died for you. You are only saved when the Holy Spirit gives you new life. That's what the application of redemption means. Last time, we looked at saving faith. Now, we move on to the effectual call. If it were up to me, I would have reversed the two. But that's a quibble and others see it differently--including Thomas Watson. THE MEANING What is the effectual call? Borrowing from the Shorter Catechism, Watson says, "Effectual calling is a gracious work of the Spirit, whereby He causes us to embrace Christ freely, as He is offered to us in the Gospel".
